AI-Powered Collaboration for a Modern Law Firm

El Dabe Ritter Trial Lawyers, a premier personal injury firm based in Los Angeles, and UpCurve Cloud, a leading Google Workspace partner and reseller have enjoyed a nine-year partnership. With UpCurve Cloud’s managed implementation of Google Workspace, El Dabe Ritter Trial Lawyers has successfully scaled from 15 to 30 users across three physical offices, as well as successfully collaborating with stakeholders and vendors nationally and globally.

They’ve also enjoyed numerous other benefits, from a more factually accurate AI solution to tools that make case research easier than ever before.

Sherif E. El Dabe, a founding partner of the firm, has enjoyed the reliability of the relationship with UpCurve Cloud. “I’ve been with them for nine years without a complaint. That’s not an experience I have with many other vendors. From the very beginning, I felt comfortable with Upcurve and their training, and I was shocked that I could have the ability to talk to a technology company and have them implement the latest technologies for me easily,” he says.

The Client: El Dabe Ritter Trial Lawyers

El Dabe Ritter Trial Lawyers is a multi-location personal injury law firm dedicated to serious, catastrophic personal injury litigation, including wrongful death, brain injury, and sexual abuse cases. Based in the Los Angeles area, the firm litigates cases throughout California.

  • Locations: Three physical offices
  • Remote Workforce: Integrated team members located in various global locations, including Northern California, Nevada, South America, Europe, and Asia.
  • Key Needs: Secure handling of private medical and legal records, reliable real-time collaboration, and robust administrative oversight and controls.

“My user experience is just so good and smooth with Google. Whenever we’re collaborating on a document, we ask people to please use a Google Doc. Don’t use a Word document. It’s just a lot quicker.”

– Sherif E. El Dabe, Founding Partner

The Challenge

Scaling Collaboration and Security

As a personal injury firm handling cases in various courts throughout California, El Dabe Ritter Trial Lawyers faces ongoing operational hurdles:

  1. Administrative Access and Control: The need for granular control over document versions and employee communications.
  2. Geographic Disparity: Creating a unified culture and workflow for staff spread across different locations.
  3. Data Security: Having a solution secure enough to handle sensitive, HIPAA-compliant medical records and legal matters.

The Solution

With UpCurve Cloud as their Google Partner, El Dabe Ritter Trial Lawyers has enjoyed a comprehensive suite of Google tools designed for professional legal operations.

1. Secure AI Implementation

The firm uses the upgraded version of Gemini (AI Expanded or Ultra Access) and NotebookLM. Unlike standard AI tools, the enhanced security of the paid tier allows colleagues to confidently upload private medical records for summarization.

2. Bringing Multiple Locations Together

By using Google Meet, Chat, and Drive for Desktop, the firm effectively eliminated the feeling of being in different locations. Teams can collaborate and edit documents simultaneously, get into Huddles for various projects and cases, even collaborate in a Google Doc while lawyers are in a courtroom in real time.

Having the desktop option for Google Workspace apps, including Drive, make Google Workspace accessible for those who are used to not working in the cloud – while still storing information in the cloud for others who need to access it.

3. Managed Support via UpCurve Cloud

As a Google reseller, UpCurve Cloud provides the firm with direct, accessible support that is often unavailable when dealing with Google directly. UpCurve initially assisted with the administrative back-end to ensure the infrastructure was optimized for growth.

4. Granular Document and User Control

As a law firm, it is necessary to have the ability to look at file access records and recover older versions of documents. “We can control and see everything that happens. We can recover old documents, old versions of documents and we’ve needed to on occasion,” says Sherif.

5. Superior Research Tools: NotebookLM and Gemini

Sherif has used both ChatGPT and Gemini, and finds Gemini much more factually accurate and robust – both important needs for legal professionals. Since they have to cross-check every fact returned to them by an AI tool, they would be in a position to know how much fact-checking each needs; and Gemini is the clear winner for them.

“I use Gemini a ton. I like it more than ChatGPT. It’s saved us a lot of time and effort in writing better and more professional correspondence. We use the paid version of Gemini because it’s more secure. As a personal injury lawyer, we deal with sensitive and private medical records and I feel comfortable uploading those records to our secure company environment.”

Once the research is complete, Sherif synthesizes many disparate files for each matter in NotebookLM, Google’s amazing research tool. He can get an audio podcast made of a matter so he can get the key highlights and find inconsistencies in depositions and other documentation much faster than he ever could before. In fact, they used to outsource this research to other companies, and they no longer have to specifically because of NotebookLM.

Key Results and Impact

Metric Impact
User Growth 200% growth in Google Workspace adoption, expanding from 15 to 30 users since implementation.
Productivity Significant time savings using NotebookLM to analyze and summarize complex litigation documents, including cases involving 13–14 depositions simultaneously.
AI Accuracy Gemini helped attorneys identify witness inconsistencies and provided more reliable legal research than other AI tools evaluated by the firm.
User Adoption Minimal training required. Attorneys and staff quickly adopted the platform thanks to the familiar Google Workspace experience.

With Google Workspace, El Dabe Ritter Trial Lawyers has been able to directly reduce administrative overhead in the form of research costs using NotebookLM, as well as enjoying the benefits of having a collaborative environment and superior AI functionality. Sherif has indicated that they’re looking at expanding their use of Google products in the future, and seizes on most new features when Google rolls them out.

According to Sherif,  “My user experience is just so good and smooth with Google. Whenever we’re collaborating on a document, we ask people to please use a Google Doc. Don’t use a Word document. It’s just a lot quicker.”
