If you spend a lot of time in Google Docs, you’ll love this latest upgrade.
Designed to help editors and creators format their documents more efficiently, the new selection feature gives users the ability to select large blocks of text at once.
That might not seem like a big deal, but it’s a small change with a significant impact. Imagine you want to bold every heading in your document. Previously, you’d have to tackle this heading by heading - select the sentence, hit the bold key, rinse and repeat.
Now you can select every single heading at once, hit the bold key, and you’re done! When you’re working with dozens of documents regularly, this can be a huge time-saver that makes editing easy and increases overall productivity.
How to use the multiple text selection tool
The upgrade began its gradual rollout at the end of May and will be available to all Workspace users and legacy G Suite Basic and Business accounts. There’s nothing admins or end users have to do to enable it, it’ll operate by default.
To use the new multi-select:
- Select the first piece of text you want to change
- Hold Command ⌘ (Mac) or Ctrl (Windows) while you select additional parts of the text
- Make your formatting changes that will apply to all highlighted text
The new feature doesn’t just have to be used for formatting. You can also add a comment to multiple bits of text or move them around the document as needed.
