A Harris poll of 1,000 young leaders aged 22-39 years old revealed that 82% of them are using AI tools at work. The recent poll, commissioned by Google, showed that rising stars in the workplace are using AI to improve their writing, feel more confident about joining meetings, and overcome feeling overwhelmed by major tasks. 93% of Gen Z use AI tools, while 79% of millennials use them.

Contrary to the “old-school” perception of AI, these workers aren’t using AI to do their jobs, they’re using it to enhance them by getting work done more efficiently. They are likely to be evangelists in the workplace about it, sharing the tools and techniques they’ve learned to help others.

Using AI to boost leadership skills

In the survey, 86% of respondents said that they believed that AI would help them become better managers by enhancing communication, improving collaboration, and making leading a team easier. While it didn’t state how exactly it would help with these skills, we can look at Gemini for Google Workspace as an example of how it could.

Gemini is Google’s AI suite, and Gemini for Workspace is an add-on that enables people who use Google Workspace to take concrete actions that will lead to great results. The tool is elegant in its simplicity - sleeving in with Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides, it can help you do everything from creating a presentation from scratch, to executing complex reports on Google Sheets.

Communication is improved with Gemini by asking it to write emails, docs, and other files with the right tone and even giving you a first draft to start with. You can take notes from meetings and create whatever you want from them - including videos with Google Vids.

Why AI is the future of work

AI boosts the productivity of highly skilled workers by 40% over workers who don’t use it, according to MIT Sloan. While younger workers are more likely to use it now, all it takes is getting the right tools in place with the right training to get everyone to use it.

Let’s look at an example of the old way of working versus the new way of working with AI. With the old way of working, a salesperson would create a templated presentation about their products or services that they adapt to each client, usually with a few illustrations and lots of words.

Even though conventional wisdom dictates that presentations work better with dynamic graphics and videos, most salespeople do not possess the skills required to create illustrations from scratch or edit videos. They may also not be the best writers, so all the words that are in the presentation may need a glow up

Enter your young leader who uses AI. They can create a brand new presentation for each client  based on notes from their meetings, covering only the products they think the client will find useful rather than everything the company sells. They can create charts or drawings specific to client pain points in minutes, and illustrative videos in maybe half an hour.

Once all of that is done, they can feed core brand messaging into the presentation to make sure it presents the brand cohesively, as well as cleaning up any grammar or copy chunks that are too long. They can even take those copy chunks and make graphics and sidebars from them

Which presentation do you think will land the sale? The answer is obvious - the one with more graphics and videos that conveys exactly what the client wants to see, rather than the presentation which has been retread with one or two slides switched out. That’s why AI is the future of work.
