Google’s AI tools go beyond helping businesses improve their workflows and maximize their resources. They’re also assisting organizations in becoming more sustainable.

Following the launch of the Google Cloud Ready Sustainability program last year, the software giant is now harnessing the power of Artificial Intelligence to drive company environmental initiatives - using its ability to securely sort and collect vast amounts of data to support Environment, Social, and Governance (ESG) goals.

How businesses can use Google Cloud to become more sustainable

For many businesses, going digital is often the first step towards sustainability. Cutting unnecessary paperwork and switching to cloud-based processes has obvious environmental and cost benefits.

Google’s AI toolkit opens up new ways for organizations to cut their paper trail and digitize previously paper-heavy processes. By making AI more accessible to developers, companies can now create their own AI-driven applications that can replace repetitive manual processes such as filling in work orders.

Using Google’s AI sandbox, Vertex AI, developers can build and customize their generative AI apps, giving them more ways to go paperless within their internal workflows and customer-facing processes.

Given the environmental costs of producing, transporting, and disposing of paper, it’s no wonder that going digital can help companies reduce their carbon footprint. For those who want to go further and do a deep dive into their carbon emissions, Google has partnered with sustainability platform Watershed.

Watershed helps businesses track their emissions under a single platform - enabling seamless reporting and monitoring. The program uses Google’s AI capabilities to gather information from across an organization, compiling it into easily accessible and digestible dashboards so users can see the numbers they need to know at a glance.

Watershed is adopting AI to ensure data is tracked and categorized in real-time so companies can access minute-to-minute updates about their emissions reporting and readily identify emerging trends and patterns.

Google’s AI analytics can be a powerful tool for tracking carbon emissions and energy consumption. Leading automotive group Renault recently adopted AI into its monitoring processes for energy efficiency and managed to reduce their consumption by 25%, setting a precedent in the automotive industry.

Driving change

AI has the potential to help mitigate 5-10% of global greenhouse gas emissions by 2030, according to a recent report from Google and the Boston Consulting Group. Google says it wants to drive that change at the organizational level, making AI-powered tools available to businesses of all sizes.

“The use of AI in helping businesses operate more sustainably is still in its early stages, but the potential is great for partner-driven AI solutions to transform the ways businesses think about and act on environmental sustainability,” says Kevin Ichhpurani, Corporate VP of Global Partner Ecosystem & Channels at Google.
