Following a period of macOS exclusivity, Google has officially launched its dedicated Gemini desktop app for Windows computers. Designed to operate alongside your daily applications, the new app gives PC users a direct line to Google’s suite of AI models without needing to keep a browser tab open.
Instant Gemini Access at Your Fingertips
The standout feature of the new native app is its system-wide overlay. By pressing Alt + Space, users can summon Gemini instantly over whatever active application they're working in. This allows for quick, in-the-flow assistance for rapid fact-checks, a summary of a document, or quick brainstorming for a presentation title.
Cheekily, this is the exact same keyboard shortcut used by Microsoft Copilot, which means Windows users who rely on those tools may need to adjust their muscle memory or remap their shortcuts.
A Dedicated Workspace and Deep Integration
Beyond quick pop-ups, the Gemini Windows app features a dedicated workspace designed for "deep work." It functions similarly to the web and mobile experiences, keeping your chat history, notebooks, and files in a left-hand sidebar.
Because the app is tightly integrated with Google Workspace, users can connect it directly to Gmail, Google Drive, and Google Docs. This allows Gemini to act as a 24/7 personal assistant (powered by features like Gemini Spark for eligible paid users), pulling necessary context straight from your personal files and emails to draft responses or summarize projects.
Creative Generation Right on the Desktop
Google is also bringing its latest media generation models directly to the PC desktop. Within the app, users can leverage Nano Banana to generate custom images for presentations or social posts.
For users with a Google AI subscription, the app also supports video generation via Gemini Omni, allowing you to direct and render high-quality creative concepts all in one place.
Google emphasizes that the application is lightweight, running quietly in the background without draining system resources or slowing down the computer.
