For a while now, AI image generation has been a massive hit for personal use. However, integrating it into professional work has been a non-starter since you couldn’t edit the generated images. Teams have often struggled with endless trial-and-error prompting and inconsistent asset quality.

Those days might finally be over. Google has officially launched Google Pics, a brand-new AI-powered image creation and editing tool built directly into Google Workspace. Moving beyond simple one-shot AI generation, Google Pics offers precision, object-based editing designed for product storytelling, marketing campaigns, and everyday business presentations. To use it as a standalone application, type pics.google.com into your browser.

What is Google Pics?

Powered by Google’s new AI imaging models, Google Pics acts as both an AI canvas and an image editor. With it, you can generate a brand new image from a text prompt, or upload an existing file from your computer, Google Photos, or Drive.

Rather than just spitting out a static image, the magic of Google Pics is its precision editing suite. It’s built on the philosophy of "fixing" and refining graphics rather than constantly starting over with a new prompt as you’re probably used to doing with Gemini and other AI tools.

Eliminate Third-Party Software for Basic Graphic Design

Google Pics comes loaded with features aimed at eliminating the need for complex, third-party graphic design software for everyday tasks, including:

  • Object-Level Editing (Segmentation): You can isolate, select, and edit specific objects within an image. Want to move an object, resize it, or change its style? You can do so locally while leaving the rest of the background completely untouched.
  • In-Image Text Manipulation: Pics can detect text elements within an image, allowing you to rewrite, reformat, or even translate text into 29 different languages. Most impressively, it does this while automatically preserving the original font, layout, and visual style.
  • High-Resolution Upscaling: For professional presentations and print materials, Pics allows you to upscale your images to crisp 2K or 4K resolutions.
  • Version History: Similar to Google Docs, Pics maintains a persistent version history, allowing you to quickly process multiple edits and revert any unwanted changes without losing your progress.

While this covers most of the basic functionality of graphic design programs, graphic designers will probably want to stick with their programs for now since Pics only covers these basics and not much more. It is more useful for the average person who wants to make small changes to existing or generated images or wants to do a bunch of edits at once - something it is difficult to do in basic tools like Canva. It’s not a graphic design software killer yet, but it may be in 2027.

Edit Images In Google Slides or Docs

Something that sets Google Pics apart from tools like Canva is its integration into the Google Workspace ecosystem. You no longer have to deal with exporting and importing. If you are working in Google Slides, you can click on any image to open the Google Pics editor as a direct overlay. This allows you to apply edits to your images without ever switching tabs.

Because it lives inside Google Workspace, it also inherits the collaboration features you already know. You can invite teammates to edit via a shared link, co-create in real-time, and save files seamlessly. Google has also noted that direct integration allowing users to edit nearly any image saved in Google Drive with a single click is rolling out in the coming weeks.

As of September 2026, users who can access Google Pics by typing pics.google.com may not have all Google Pics features rolled out to Docs or Slides yet. Don’t worry, it’s coming soon. Use from within Docs or Slides is also subject to the usual AI usage limits. You will be notified if you have used all of your credits for the month.

Google Pics Access and Rollout

Google Pics began its gradual rollout on September 1, 2026. It’s currently available for paid professional and educational tiers, meaning free Google accounts and Workspace Business Starter plans do not have access at this time.

Customers on the following Google Workspace plans will see it:

  • Business Standard and Plus
  • Enterprise Standard and Plus
  • Google AI Pro and Ultra
  • Google AI Pro for Education

Administrators will see the product toggled ON by default, though it can be disabled at the domain, organizational unit, or group level from the Google Admin dashboard. If you are on an eligible plan, try typing pics.new into your browser to see if you’ve got it. Full availability and rollout details are available here.
