Google is betting that the future of productivity is using your voice instead of your keyboard. Originally previewed at Google I/O 2026, Google is officially rolling out conversational AI voice capabilities powered by its Gemini 3.5 Live audio models. At the moment, they are rolling out as Gmail Live, Docs Live, and Keep Live for individual users, but will launch for Google Workspace customers soon.
Instead of traditional voice dictation where you have to awkwardly say words like "comma" or "new paragraph," these new tools act as interactive assistants that understand natural speech, intent, and context.
Elder millennials and Gen X will remember how big a deal dictation tools were when they first tried to roll them out about two decades ago. Everyone thought they would be massive game changers, and they would have been if they had worked properly. The difference between those tools and Google’s AI dictation in its various apps is that we know Google’s will work, turning Gemini into more of a personal assistant. While Google says that they are coming soon for Google Workspace subscribers, they can’t come soon enough.
Gmail Live: Stop Searching, Start Asking
We have all wasted time digging through endless email threads on our phones trying to find a specific detail. Gmail Live completely bypasses the traditional search bar, allowing you to have a conversational interaction with your inbox.
Instead of typing keywords, you can simply ask a question like, "What’s my flight's gate number tomorrow?" or "What are the check-in instructions for my Airbnb?" Gmail Live will scan your emails, provide a spoken answer, and show a live transcript. Because it is conversational, you can easily ask follow-up questions or interrupt to narrow down the answer without having to start over.
Docs Live: Your Hands-Free Co-Writer
Hard to have a blank screen problem if you’re not staring at a screen. Docs Live allows you to talk through your ideas and automatically builds a structured document on the fly.
Think of it as an old-school secretary. You can verbally instruct Docs to draft a project proposal, and with your permission, it can pull relevant details directly from your Google Drive, Chat, or Gmail. You can ramble, brainstorm, change directions mid-sentence, and tell the AI to "shorten the introduction" or "turn the next section into bullets." It handles the heavy lifting of outlining and refining your tone so you can get to a first draft faster.
Keep Live: Turn Brain Dumps into Structured Notes
Google Keep is already a favorite for quick note-taking, but Keep Live turns it into an intelligent scratchpad. You no longer need to worry about formatting your thoughts.
You can simply start a voice session and "brain dump" everything on your mind—from random project ideas to a sprawling grocery list. Keep Live understands your stream of consciousness, processes the information in the background, and automatically converts your spoken words into neatly structured checklists, categorized meeting recaps, or actionable notes.
If you’re a Google Workspace user, you can access Google Keep in the right side panel of almost any Google Workspace app such as Docs or Slides. It is not available as its own app. The voice features are going to make Keep much more useful overall, so get familiar with it now.
These audio AI features have launched in English for mobile users on iOS and Android. However, they are currently limited to premium consumer tiers, with business rollouts slated as coming soon.
